Blepharoplasty is better known as an eye lift surgery or eyelid lift. It is currently the third most popular cosmetic procedure in the US. This procedure is performed when the eyelids droop, or if there is a formation of fatty ‘bags’ under the eyes.
A Blepharoplasty may include the upper lids, lower lids, or both. If only the upper eyelids are operated on it is called a brow lift; if only the lower eyelids are operated on it is called Lower Blepharoplasty.
The Blepharoplasty procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and both eye lids, upper and lower, can be operated on at the same time. A brow lift surgery is usually performed on people above the age of 35 who have visible eyelid droop.
Considerations before Your Blepharoplasty
All cosmetic surgeries require thought. It is best not to rush into a procedure but take time to do your research. Carefully select an experienced doctor and discuss the impact of the procedure on your health. When you’re going in for a consultation, ask your doctor as many questions as you can.
o Blepharoplasty may be a rather common procedure, but this does not mean that all cosmetic surgeons are able to perform it. Choose only a certified surgeon.
o You might also want to verify that the doctor has positive recommendations - post your queries on various available online forums and discussion boards, and inquire about your doctor.
o There really is an amazing amount of information on the Internet – which means your research can get bogged down with a ‘too-much-information’ situation. Try and connect with individuals who have had the procedure or some experience with it, and ask them to recommend resources for more information. Finding the right doctor is typically a combination of this kind of research and personal recommendations. The most expensive doctors are not essentially the best; it’s the experience and track record that matter.
o Preparations before the procedure are also important and you should ensure you are well rested and in good physical and mental health before you decide on the brow lift procedure. You doctor will usually help you decide this.
o Avoid the use of medications such as Aspirin, Alnagon, Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medication in the weeks before the surgery. This also applies to any ‘over the counter’ medicines such as nutritional supplements. Taking these medications before the eye lift surgery can increase bleeding during and after the procedure.
o Avoid smoking and drinking for at least a week or even ten days before the procedure. Smoking delays healing and increases your risk of complications, so avoid cigarettes and alcohol for two weeks after the procedure as well.
o Plan to be away from work for at least seven to ten days after the procedure.
o For the first seven to ten days, it is good for you to avoid bending and any kind of strain. It would be best to arrange for someone to either assist you about the home or ensure your fridge is well stocked and you have kept all your requirements at hand.
o With any kind of cosmetic procedure it is important to have realistic expectations; and it is no different for an eye lift surgery. An eye lift procedure will improve your looks, but don’t expect miracles and you will be happier with the eventual results.
o With the sacs under your eyes gone, your face will look more alert, rested and perhaps much younger. Unfortunately, this procedure requires a significant amount of recovery time, and it can take up to six months before the scars fade away.
