PART II

Where fillers work
Restylane and Juvederm are the most popular among the dermal fillers and are based on hyaluronic acid, a substance which occurs naturally in the body. What these fillers do is to level out wrinkles and fill depressions by augmenting the volume of collagen in the skin, and thus re-establishing connective tissues. Thus, they literally increase the volume of skin.

Different ingredients may form the base for fillers, although hyaluronic acid-based fillers are most popular. Fillers also differ in terms of their thickness and hence the duration of their effect.

Typically, dermal fillers are most useful in cases where wrinkles are visible even in the absence of facial muscular activity.

Combining Botox and dermal fillers
In many cases, the most effective anti-aging treatment involves combinations of Botox and dermal fillers. Here, while the Restylane or Juvederm fills in the existing deep wrinkles, the Botox prevents new wrinkles from arising or existing wrinkles from deepening further.

Some caveats
Neither Botox nor any of the dermal fillers are without complications. With Botox, some of the side-effects that can occur on a regular basis include bruising from the needle stick, or on some occasions, unintended paralysis of adjacent muscles.

More serious issues arise with the rise of “bargain Botox”, including diluted Botox injections, unwanted side effects with any medication the consumer may be taking, infection or disease from lack of proper sterilization, mistakes due to unsupervised procedure and lack of documentation for legal action in cases of botched procedures.

Side effects that may occur with dermal fillers include bruising, swelling, pain and bumps. Critical problems occur when some dermatologists or cosmetic surgeons try “off label” treatments or use increased dosages at their own discretion, leading to a variety of problems such as allergic reaction, infection, pain, blisters and migration of the injection to another area of the face, sometimes leading to blurred vision, disfigurement and even heart attack.

While Botox, Restylane and the other injectables can produce remarkable results, they are not without limitations. Consumers must be realistic in their expectations and turn to certified professionals for the most effective as well as safest utilizations of these anti-aging treatments.
