Thermage is a cosmetic procedure used to tighten flabby and loose facial and/or neck skin. It works on the principle of stimulating the subcutaneous collagen layer, thereby inducing new collagen growth. It is not the same as Laser Therapy. Unlike laser, it does not require specific skin types and tones, and suits all and sundry. Results are visible almost immediately.
The collagen layers underneath the skin are heated using infra red waves or special heating mechanisms. The latest machines make use of capacitive radio frequency generators for the heating process. To prevent burning of the superficial skin, a coolant is subjected in the form of spray around the applied area. The heat causes the existing collagen layer to shrink, thereby tightening the skin. Within a few months, new collagen layers replace the old ones, giving the skin a natural, young appearance.
The procedure is absolutely painless. There is a little sensation of heat when the collagen layers attain temperature and shrink. In most cases, the treatment is done in one session unlike laser which usually takes four or more sessions. The above procedure takes about 20 minutes to an hour depending on the expanse and condition of the site. Longevity of results depends on the patient’s maintenance and his/her natural aging cycle.
How can I benefit from it?
Thermage can do wonders to your sagging neckline or your wrinkled face. It is a non-surgical procedure, and hence does not involve the usual risks of the scalpel. Thermage can provide the following benefits:
- Tighter facial skin
- Sharper contours
- A more ‘chiseled’ jaw lin
- Reduced wrinkles
- Reduced nasolabial stretch marks
- Reduced eyebrow frown marks
- Tighter sebaceous pores
- Reduced spots and marks
Thermage gives best results for people who have just spotted their aging signs. Benefits may last up to 8-10 years, depending on the care and maintenance as well as one’s natural genetic aging speed. Lifestyle factors like stress, smoking, alcohol may have indirect effect, and may reduce its efficacy.
Are there any risks or drawbacks?
Like Botox, Restylane and Juvederm, Thermage also is a temporary procedure and can never assure somebody of lifelong permanence. It is also not a substitute for surgical face-lift, and will never yield similar results.
Some individuals may not achieve the desired results from Thermage, especially those with very loose skin. For them, a second session may be required after six or eight months.
Chances of minor burns, scars or pigmentation are associated with this procedure. Normal sensations are common. However, some individuals may experience extreme pains and discomfort even for days after the procedure.
Thermage cannot provide significant fat reduction. So those wanting to get rid of excess fat, especially below chin may be disappointed. They are recommended to try Liposuction instead.
A rarer condition may result in non-uniform surface irregularity that may be permanent.
Lastly, the procedure is new and still expensive. Most FDA approved clinics can charge anywhere from $1000 to $3000!
All facts considered, Thermage can offer tremendous benefits to people seeking a youthful appearance without undergoing the knife. It has its unique pros and cons when compared to other non-surgical procedures like Restylane or Botox. However, it is always advisable that you talk to your surgeon and choose a procedure that suits you best. Have a safe treatment!
